The girls just keep on killing it! Olivia Rodrigo is bringing your Monday morning antidote with ‘the cure’.
Olivia described ‘the cure’ as “not, like, a breakup song. It’s not a love song. It’s, like, this sort of weird thing in the middle that I’ve been trying to express for a long time.”
Helping her express those feelings? None other than The Cure frontman himself, Robert Smith. Smith has shared a stage with Olivia on more than one occasion, and even collaborated on the duet ‘What’s Wrong With Me?’ from her newest album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love.
The admiration between artists goes both ways. After recently joining Olivia on stage at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound music festival, Smith, despite feeling “a bit lost” joining the 23-year-old former Disney Channel star, expressed his fondness for the singer, stating, “She is genuinely fantastic as a songwriter, a singer and a performer – I genuinely love what she does.”
‘the cure’ music video was also a labour of love. A passionate team of over two dozen craftspeople, led by production designer Liam Moore, worked for a month on the massive undertaking that bridged the worlds of practical effects, stop-motion puppetry and miniature art. Storyboardist Jaime Gerin conceptualized the video ideas and how it would all come to life, writing on her storyboards, “I cannot stress enough that the entire hospital is made out of arts and crafts”.
