Mt. Joy – “Lucy” | Song of the Week
No vague interpretations or hidden meanings this week, Mt. Joy gives us the powerfully heart-wrenching ‘Lucy’.
Riding high after playing a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden, the band ran into an old friend (pseudonymed ‘Lucy’) while celebrating at the bar. The party came to a screeching halt when she shared that she’d been recently diagnosed with multiple brain tumours.
Reflecting on the fragility of existence, lead vocalist Matt Quinn was inspired by the idea of someone living their life without fear when the odds are so stacked against them, and penned ‘Lucy’ as an homage to her spirit.
Despite the uphill battle, ‘Lucy’ chose to fight – and continues to fight to this day. When the song was released, Mt. Joy asked her if there was a charity she’d want to see supported in her honour – she chose the American Brain Tumour Association, and they raised over $1,500 for the cause.
““Lucy” is a song inspired by people living with potentially terminal diagnoses. This hit close to home for us last year and we’re in awe of the courage displayed by so many people fighting to enjoy whatever time they have rather than living in fear.”
