International Women’s Day- Celebrating the Powerhouses of Alternative
Hello my love!
Today is International Women’s Day, and this year the theme for International Women’s Day is, I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights. We are celebrating the amazing women in the Alternative music scene here today, so I wanted to get into some of my favorite powerhouses and their impact.
Florence and the Machine
Florence Welch is ethereal- when I saw her perform at SKOOKUM and she just flew across the stage, I had to pinch myself to stay in the moment, and experience everything she had to share. She is the type of performer who lays it all out on the stage, and seeing her in the flesh is like catching a fairy out in the wild- it’s a magical experience. Their latest album, High as Hope is like getting a sneak into her journal- she tackles her sobriety, eating disorders and the depths of her emotions. She is vulnerable, powerful, and passionate, and I can’t get enough.
The Beaches
They just finished their Canadian tour and we were lucky enough to have them stop by and play before their show at the Commodore. When they first came out, I started to follow all of them on social media and just got the feeling that they are incredibly genuine human beings- and they proved that when Peak Mornings with Tyler and Lynch had a chance to ask them some questions. Down to earth, talented, hilarious and they share an undeniable chemistry- you gotta see the Beaches live. Please.
Billie Eilish
Can you imagine being 13, releasing a song, getting picked up by a record label, and at 18 becoming one of the biggest artists in the world? When I was 13 I was just proud that my parents let me take the city bus by my self. I continue to be blown away by her talent, her activism and watching her really find her voice. If she is this commanding at the age of 18, what will 28 bring her? 38? I am fascinated by her and the way her and brother Finneas create and produce her music, and continue to be in awe.
Metric
Metric and Emily Haines was one of the first bands I saw in concert- I was just starting to step out from my parents musical tastes and form my own, and Emily always spoke to me. I wanted to get bangs just like her- thankfully my mom stopped me. I was in awe of her stage presence and will always hold their early albums close to my heart. She is effortlessly cool, inspiring and a force to be reckoned with.
Brittany Howard
Growing up and listening to so many bands with male lead singers, the lyrics were always told from a male point of view. When I first heard Alabama Shakes and heard Brittany Howard, I was stunned. Her lyrics took a hold me of me, and I felt seen for the first time. Every time I hear You Ain’t Alone, my heart breaks over and over again in the most perfect way. She is an electric current when you see her perform- raw, vulnerable and her vocals send a charge right up your spine. I will always be in awe of Brittany.
