Violet Grohl blends references with real-life experiences in your latest PEAK Song of the Week – ‘Bug In The Cake’.
Off of her debut album, Be Sweet To Me, ‘Bug In The Cake’ loosely tells the allegedly true story of Violet Grohl moving in with the ghost of her paternal grandmother, Virginia Grohl. After her nana’s passing, an event that completely changed the sonic trajectory of the album, Violet began living in the home in an attempt to save it from being torn down by developers. That’s when the eerieness kicked off…
“One night, I went to drop off a bunch of stuff, and I heard someone talking in the back of the house, and I was like, ‘Did somebody break in?’,” she shares. “I walked into my grandma’s bedroom, and the TV was on her favourite news channel, MSNBC. It tripped me out so bad. And I was like, ‘Oh, my God, Nana, you did that. You totally did that’.”
Just like her past Song of the Week, ‘THUM’, Violet collaborated with Nikki Milan Houston to direct and produce the music video, which stars Violet herself alongside adult film actress Nina Hartley, all shot on Kodak Motion Picture Film. The vintage influences don’t stop there, as Violet croons that she’s “Moving to grandma’s, moving to grandma’s, moving to grandma’s”, which is suspiciously reminiscent of the “Grandma take me home” repetition in ‘Sliver’, by her father’s old band, Nirvana.
